Gregg Popovich Sidelined Indefinitely Due to Health Issue; Mitch Johnson Named Interim Spurs Coach

Gregg Popovich health issue

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, a legendary figure in the NBA, is facing an indefinite absence due to an undisclosed health issue that arose over the weekend. This setback, reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, means assistant coach Mitch Johnson will take over head coaching duties in Popovich’s absence.

Popovich, 75, was unable to coach the Spurs’ recent 113-103 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves. Johnson, who was informed just two and a half hours before the game, led the team effectively, earning praise from players including veteran guard Chris Paul. “Mitch did a great job, man,” Paul said postgame. “I think our whole coaching staff [did]. Things happen within this league all the time and just like with the players, it’s next man. So, shout out to Mitch, he did a great job tonight.”

The nature of Popovich’s health issue remains private, but this is not the first time he has been sidelined due to health concerns. Johnson acknowledged the unpredictability of such situations, saying, “He’s not feeling well. This has happened before. Everybody’s just always got to be ready for the next man up. We’ve had it with injuries and sometimes people get sick or don’t feel well or things come up in life.”

The timing of Popovich’s absence is significant for the Spurs, who are 3-3 as they prepare for a challenging road trip, facing the LA Clippers and Houston Rockets. Johnson will serve as interim head coach, continuing to lead the team until Popovich is fit to return.

A Legendary Career

Popovich’s impact on the Spurs and the NBA as a whole is monumental. He has been at the helm since 1996, marking him as the longest-tenured coach in the league. His resume includes five NBA championships and 1,391 career victories, making him the winningest coach in league history. Popovich has also accumulated 170 postseason wins and was instrumental in leading Team USA to a gold medal in the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Recognized among the Top 15 Coaches in NBA History during the league’s 75th Anniversary celebrations, Popovich’s influence extends beyond his coaching record. His leadership and mentorship have been foundational in shaping both the Spurs organization and the careers of many players and coaches who have worked under him.

Looking Ahead

While Popovich recuperates, the Spurs’ immediate focus shifts to continuity and maintaining competitive performance under Johnson’s leadership. The team has already shown resilience, with Johnson demonstrating readiness to step into the role. The Spurs’ upcoming games against the Clippers and Rockets will test this resolve.

Fans and players alike await updates on Popovich’s health, hoping for his swift recovery. Meanwhile, the Spurs will navigate this period with the same “next man up” mentality that has been a hallmark of Popovich’s coaching philosophy.
